The Origins of Presponse
April 14th 1970, a routine stirring of the Oxygen tanks aboard Apollo 13 turned what was supposed to be a straightforward mission into a crisis that gripped the world. If it wasn't for the tenacity and ingenuity of the men and women involved on that fateful day, Apollo 13's story might have ended right then and there. Instead, the human element overcame a major engineering disaster and turned it into a "successful failure" with the crew returning safely to Earth.
On February 24, 1989 while aboard United Flight 811, I too experienced a massive engineering disaster when the locking mechanism of the forward cargo hatch failed, causing an explosive decompression event in mid-air. Nine souls perished that day as the result of what Boeing later deemed to be a poorly designed aluminum locking sector on the door. The human element again was the difference in this situation with Captain David Cronin and crew forcing a successful emergency landing at Honolulu International. That's what we have in today's security landscape. A "successful failure." The industry as a whole is still plugging leaks and developing workarounds to solve problems that should have been addressed in the initial building phase. All of that human brainpower is being leveraged to solve what amounts to $0.05 of insulation on a Teflon wire or an inadequately designed cargo door latch.
You see the end result of this linear approach to security splashed across the front page of every news publication in the world with alarming frequency. This traditional approach is riddled with faulty wiring and poorly designed latches. By nature, it is unable to protect against today's threats, much less what's just appearing over the horizon.
That's why we went back to the drawing board. We learned from the mistakes of the past, analyzed the current state of security and came up with a new, cyclical approach we call Presponse. It's a holistic view of security that combines advanced pre-detection, machine learning and secure design lifecycle solutions into a truly future-proof package.
As former NASA Flight Director Gene Krantz famously stated, "Failure is not an option."
